How to Ship a Convertible: Protecting the Top on the Road

Convertibles are made for open roads and sunny days. When it’s time to ship one, though, that soft top or folding hardtop deserves a little extra thought. Here’s how to get your convertible where it’s going in good shape.

Why convertibles need extra care

A fabric soft top is more exposed than a steel roof. On a long trip, it faces sun, rain, dust and road debris. Most convertibles ship without any trouble, but the top is the part owners worry about most, and for good reason.

Open or enclosed transport?

Open transport is the most common option and works well for many convertibles, especially newer daily drivers with a hardtop or a top in good condition. Enclosed transport keeps the car out of the weather and away from road debris, which many owners prefer for soft tops, classic convertibles and high-end models. Our guide to open vs. enclosed auto transport compares the two, and classic and luxury car transport covers higher-value vehicles.

How to prep a convertible

  • Close and latch the top. Ship with the top up and secured.
  • Check the top for wear. Small tears or loose seams can get worse at highway speed on an open trailer. Repair them before shipping or consider enclosed transport.
  • Remove loose items. Clear the cabin and trunk, and take out anything that could shift.
  • Take dated photos. Photograph the top and body from every angle before pickup.
  • Leave about a quarter tank of fuel.

Timing your shipment

Fall is a popular time to move convertibles, especially for owners heading south for the winter. Booking ahead gives you more flexibility, particularly if you want enclosed transport. See how far in advance to ship a car and our snowbird car shipping page for seasonal tips.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a convertible ship on an open carrier?

Yes. Many convertibles ship on open carriers with the top up and secured. Enclosed transport adds protection from weather and debris.

Should the top be up or down?

Up and latched, for every shipment.

Is enclosed transport worth it for a convertible?

Many owners choose it for soft tops, classic convertibles and high-value cars, since it keeps the top out of sun, rain and road debris.
