Big vehicles come with a few extra questions when it’s time to ship. Full-size pickups and SUVs are some of the most common vehicles on the road, and they ship all the time, but their size, weight and any add-ons can affect how they’re transported.
Size and weight matter
Car carriers have limits on height, length and total weight. A standard half-ton pickup or mid-size SUV usually fits without trouble. Heavy-duty trucks, extended cabs with long beds, and lifted vehicles take up more room and can affect how a carrier loads the trailer.
When you request a quote, give us the exact year, make and model, and tell us about any changes from factory spec. That helps us match your vehicle with the right carrier.
Tell us about modifications
Lift kits, oversized tires, roof racks, light bars, tonneau covers and ladder racks all change a vehicle’s dimensions. Let us know up front so there are no surprises on pickup day.
Empty the bed and the cargo area
It’s tempting to use the truck bed or SUV cargo space to move a few extra things. In general, keep it empty. Loose items can shift in transit, add weight, and aren’t covered the way the vehicle is. Remove toolboxes that aren’t bolted down, and secure or remove anything on the roof.
Open or enclosed?
Most trucks and SUVs ship on open carriers, which is the most common and widely available option. If you’re shipping a high-end SUV or a truck you’ve invested heavily in, enclosed transport adds protection from weather and road debris. Our guide to open vs. enclosed transport explains the trade-offs.
Prep checklist
- Clean the vehicle so any existing marks are easy to see at inspection
- Take dated photos from every angle
- Remove personal items from the cab, bed and cargo area
- Leave about a quarter tank of fuel
- Note any leaks or mechanical quirks for the driver
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you ship a lifted truck?
Often, yes. Share the lift height and tire size when you request a quote so we can find a carrier that can take it.
Can I leave things in my truck bed?
It’s best to keep the bed empty. Loose items can shift and add weight, and they aren’t protected like the vehicle.
Do SUVs and trucks ship on the same carriers as cars?
Usually. Standard trucks and SUVs ride on the same open carriers as cars, while oversized or heavily modified vehicles may need special arrangements.
